Mobile Coverage in Cameron Highlands
Signal strength varies across the highlands — here’s what to expect.
In-Town Coverage
Tanah Rata and Brinchang both have good 4G coverage from major Malaysian networks (Maxis, Celcom, Digi, U Mobile). Most cafes and guesthouses also offer free WiFi.
Outlying Areas
Signal can be weak or absent on jungle trails, at the Mossy Forest summit and on some highland roads. Download offline maps before heading into remote areas.
Tourist SIMs
Prepaid tourist SIM cards from Maxis and Celcom offer the best data packages for short-stay visitors. Available at Tanah Rata phone shops.
Data Needs
A 10GB data pack is sufficient for a 3-day highland trip with normal usage. Top up in town before heading out.
For all your mobile and cellular phone needs, you can rest assure that you can find a lot of options. This is because Cameron Highlands enjoy the same coverage of mobile services the same as other places around Malaysia.
Maxis, Digi, Celcom and other Telcos
If you are a local visitor to Cameron Highlands, you will find that your current telco company (Maxis, Digi, Celcom, U Mobile and others) will have sufficient coverage in most places. However, if you are in the more remote areas, some telcos might not give you strong coverage so you need to be aware. For foreigners, roaming using your own telco service back home will be sufficient. However, you will always be advised to use the local numbers where you can buy a prepaid service from any of the operators which is very affordable and value-for-money.
There is a Celcom Cube outlet located in Tanah Rata while you can practically buy prepaid top-ups at most newsstands and convenience stores. Meanwhile, if you are at these outlets, they usually sell standard accessories like phone covers and screen protectors. The most sought-after power banks and charging cables of iPhones, Samsung and Lenovo gadgets are usually available as well.
