Camping in Cameron Highlands
A guide to camping sites and what to expect when sleeping under the highland stars.
What Makes Highland Camping Special
Camping in Cameron Highlands at 1,500m altitude means genuinely cool nights — 12–18°C even in the Malaysian summer months. The highland air is fresh and clear, night skies are star-rich due to low light pollution, and dawn mist over jungle treetops makes for unforgettable morning experiences.
The unique combination of cool temperatures, highland biodiversity and dramatic landscape means highland camping feels nothing like lowland jungle camping in Malaysia.
Camping Sites
Official camping sites are available near Tanah Rata and within designated recreation forest areas. Wild camping in highland forest reserve areas requires Forestry Department permission. Always camp in designated sites to protect the highland ecosystem and avoid getting lost.
Some private landowners near the highland fringe areas also permit camping for a small fee — ask local guesthouses for current recommended sites.
Highland Camping Essentials
What to bring for a safe and comfortable highland camping trip.
Warm Sleeping Bag
Highland nights drop to 12°C. A 3-season sleeping bag is the minimum — a 4-season bag is more comfortable. Do not underestimate the cold.
Waterproof Tent
Highland rainfall can arrive fast and heavily. A fully waterproof tent with taped seams is essential. Avoid cheap festival tents on highland terrain.
Insect Protection
Jungle-edge camping brings mosquitoes and sandflies. Long sleeves, insect repellent with DEET and a tent with intact mosquito mesh are critical.
Leave No Trace
Pack out all waste, use biodegradable soap for washing, do not disturb wildlife and keep noise to a minimum especially near highland forest areas.
Permits
Check with the Pahang Forestry Department and local authorities for current camping permit requirements before pitching in forest reserve areas.
Camping in Cameron Highlands has never been so fun – you can expect beautiful rolling hills and stunning jungle trails along the dense forest. There are two wonderful camping sites in Cameron Highlands which are the Sungai Pauh Camp site and another one at the peak of Brinchang Mount. You can locate the Sungai Pauh Camp easily as it is located at the Forestry Department. Since the department is located right behind the captivating golf course, you can expect magnificent scenery set amidst a gorgeous valley.
To get to the Forestry Department, take a turn from the main road at Smokehouse or perhaps, you can also drive around the golf course. Then, you’ll notice a junction branching off to All Souls Church and Ken Slim. Turn to the road leading to the church and Forestry Department is just slightly further ahead of the church. Those with vehicles can enter the department’s compound because the ample parking space allows visitors to park their vehicles there.
